Work is Life

Life is real, though finite. The body is real, though ephemeral. The mind and soul drive the body, through the senses. The work which I do, is both real and eternal. The world has never been a static place. It is composed of creativity, thoughts and action.
The capturing of natural scenic beauty, or living beings by an artist or film-maker, in a single frame, may appear static, but it appeals to the senses. It spurs human beings to act. The stillness transforms into movement, as the mind connects one frame to another.
I exist because
I act to change the world in
bits and instalments.
I leave a part of myself
in every bit that I touch.
THE HYPE OF WORK-LIFE BALANCE
I have never been able to grasp the concept of Work-Life balance, as I couldn’t separate the two aspects of existence. Do we refer to employment/a professional’s engagement with clients as Work? Do we refer to entertainment and relaxation as Life? Some women find themselves divided between home and the workplace. Is it not akin to balancing two different arenas of work?
Are we really dead, while we work for a living? Is it that the former is imposed, and the latter a choice? Does the level of productivity separate the two concepts? Or do we refer to paid work as Work, and unpaid work as Life?
PAID OR PAYBACK
Artists and athletes come to life, while delivering on their chosen platforms. A philosopher or research scientist never stops thinking about the pursuit of truth and excellence. Assuming that the final delivery of their craft is paid for, how do we classify the time and effort spent on training and honing new skills? Where does the preparatory ground of planning, education and apprenticeship stand? Which departure bell decides the end of one, and beginning of another?
Work is an individual’s payback to the world, and it is not necessarily paid work. We hone our identity, and justify our existence in the world, with what we do between the two ends of life and death. The gift of life, is the ability to think and act.
THE UNCERTAINTY OF FUTURE
‘The future is not an accident waiting to happen. It is not guaranteed, but can be designed’
Designing the future starts when we take our first step to walk, or utter the first syllable to talk. Children imitate adults and young companions, without any parental pressure. They instinctively know that they need certain skills to survive. While animals may remain stuck at survival, human beings are thrown into a whirlpool of designed education and development.
It is perhaps, at this point, that a human starts calling it ‘work’. Being confined to classrooms, and examinations could be ‘forced learning’ for a child, since the formats do not engage their natural curiosity, or desire to learn. The mind-set continues, that all forms of ‘confined functioning, driven by another’ is Work, and is to be despised. The animals never know the difference between the two, unless they are enslaved by a master, in the zoo or circus.
THE TYRANNY OF CHOICE
If we want to do it, it is Life.
If we are asked to do it, it is Work.
The leisure business starts impinging on our ‘life’, offering paid services for designed indulgence. Yes, we choose and pay, and then ….. follow the terms and conditions of the package.
Is this really our chosen ‘Life’?
What if we choose to spend a weekend, with our chosen tools of expression? It could be the mundane computer device, or the kitchen.
Creativity is not confined to arts and crafts. Our creativity spills over in the manner we dress for the workplace, the designing of communication formats, the table layout for dinner and the menu we plan (not necessarily cook) for different meals.
The mind does not know the difference between ‘imposed’ and ‘chosen’ activities while it delivers. It just creates.
We need to make a conscious choice at every step, of further action, and the impact it will have on our world and others. It is all Life.
